School loyalty or family loyalty? Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle The Musical review by Joy Wong

Excerpt from a review by Joy Wong: School loyalty or family loyalty?

Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle The Musical has proven how creative and clever Filipinos are. Even if the setting of this musical is set on 1968…the rivalry between these two schools can still be seen on the television every time they face each other in the UAAP basketball game. If Filipinos can act, sing and dance well to foreign shows, they definitely can act, sing and dance way better to an original Filipino show such as this because this is what they are familiar to.

As with any play, in the first 5- 10 minutes, it is the responsibility of the cast and crew to whisk you away to the era and inner personas of the characters. There will be cringing! But after a few, when the music sets in, and the kolehiyala Miriam girls start to sing about wanting to get ligaw by a La Sallista, that’s when the entertainment begins.

The play is set in 1968. This being the time of our Papas, Mamas, Titos and Titas, but you will find many a scene that you can relate to. #kilegmoments

Music is by Ed Gatchalian. I specifically enjoyed the numbers of kolehiyalas and the housewives. You will be delightfully surprised, I promise.

Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle competition continues in a Musical By Ely Valendez

Excerpt from a review by Ely Valendez: Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle competition continues in a Musical

As I watch the Rivalry, I couldn’t help myself but compare the actors’s behaviors to my friends and office mates from La Salle and Ateneo, and basing only on my interactions with them. Then I sent my former boss, an Atenean a text message to watch the show. Am sure, he wouldn’t be disappointed especially if I would base it on the rounds of applause and laughs that filled the theater when I watched the show on February 16.

This writer is neither an Atenean nor Lasallite so it’s given if I couldn’t relate about the jokes and the story. But no, I didn’t feel I’m not part of the story, instead, I was ushered to this funny part of the Philippine history, with great acts and musicality as a background.

The musical’s original sounds make it such a lovely play to listen to. The costumes are impressive, and despite the playful heckling and banters present in the musical, the play remains light. Both schools are presented with fair stereotypes—funny, but not insulting at the same time.  The play also had witty lines and a few surprises.

I ask my patients, who are UAAP players from the Ateneo, why they get too aggressive when playing against DLSU. “It’s in the blood” na daw. It’s just the way it has been.

Last month, I got the answer I needed when I watched Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle Musical. I laughed so hard it hurts like being thrown mineral water bottles!

The family and I were entertained to the highest level: the plot was not too complicated and was easy to understand; the performers’ voices were very audible; the music was superb and golly, their voices are so good!

RIVALRY: THE MUSICAL – BEYOND THE BLUES AND THE GREENS by Precious C. Lee Cundangan

Take it from me, I’m a former Thomasian and now I’m an M.A. Theatre Arts in UP and still I get excited when La Salle and Ateneo are head on collision with each other. I was a student in UST when the school had its historical four-peat and yet, when it comes to La Salle and Ateneo I would root on my favorite school as if I have another one.

That’s how fierce and charismatic the two schools rivalry is in the Filipino psyche. You don’t have to study in La Salle or Ateneo to feel and know how heated their competition between each other is.

The “ rivalry ” between Ateneo and La Salle, or between La Salle and Ateneo has been on  going as far as everyone can remember. How this all began, no one can really say. Name any field of competition, and the electricity of this rivalry sizzles, permeates and explodes.

This is most evident in every basketball game between these two schools during the NCAA and in the UAAP Tournaments.

But to transport this “competition” as a musical theater production is a rare feat.

Lyricist Joel Trinidad clearly conveyed the intent of “Rivalry” as he expertly dribbled lines and shot messages from center and sides, gliding upon the catchy melodies composed and arranged by Ed Gatchalian. Director Jaime de Mundo expertly managed and coached the excellent actors and efficient production teams. Surely, “Rivalry” can proudly vie for championship over other recent local theater offerings.
